Frequently Asked Questions

Why Energy Healing or Reiki?

There are many healing modalities out in the world, Yoga Therapy utilizes the principles of yoga to help heal the body, mind, and spirit. This is a therapeutic model that I have chosen to work in and the therapeutic working relationship is the cornerstone of a positive outcome. Yoga therapy is not an exact science, it is a journey of self-exploration through individualized practice. You will get out what you put in! In this process, you will be supported by me regularly and guided through ancient principles that lead to personal transformation.

Yoga therapy has a very wide array of maladies that it addresses with great efficacy. We use many tools in yoga, (postures, breathing, chanting, pilgrimages, meditation, etc.) to address symptoms and underlying conditions. Most importantly, we look at each person in their entirety and base much of treatment on Ayurveda and yogic principles of self-regulation.

What does the process of yoga therapy look like?

If you are interested in working together, we will have a free 15-minute session for us to connect and meet. In that session, I will get an overall sense of what you work on and you can get a sense of who I am and the process. At that point, you can decide if you want to move forward with treatment.

Our first full session is a 90-120 intake session. This longer session is for me to gain a full and clear understanding of your past, current, and expected landscapes. I will gather lots of details and information about your routines and patterns. Additionally, it will be an opportunity for me to clarify what you are seeking to accomplish. We may have the opportunity to do some practice or for me to share some prescriptive adjustments.

After the intake is complete, I will create a personal practice for you. Every client has a personal practice that will meet short and long-term goals. Every practice is unique to you. Practices are adjusted based on age, season, and personal change (health or other developments). Generally, new students will receive practices that are suited to their capacity and become more complex and demanding as capacity increases.

The second session is where I present you with your practice and teach you the ins and outs of your practice. We determine your objectives and expectations together. We go over any questions or concerns. From that point on, you are in the driver’s seat. You will be to do your practice regularly as prescribed.

We will meet regularly at first and then taper to about once a month or once quarterly based on need.

What is a personal practice?

A personal practice is something that is designed for the individual. In contrast to a group or public class, where the purpose is to serve the group, a personal practice is designed only for you. A personal practice varies widely from person to person: the same way that no two people are alike, no two practices are the same.

Some practices are meant to be done once a day and may involve varying components of asana, pranayama, chanting or meditation. Some practices are meant to be done several times a day and be shorter in length.

Rest assured that the practice you get will meet you where you are! The goal is not to overwhelm but course-correct gently and continuosly. Also, please note that although much of the practice will be prescribed by me, you will have direct input to the creation and development of your own practice. The goal is to empower you to heal, transform, and grow.

How do I know that my practice is working?

If you’re coming to see me, the odds are that something in your life is not working. Maybe you are physically injured, suffering from chronic pain, suffering from an illness or condition, and are seeking spiritual growth or personal development.

A personal practice works because you do it. You will get out what you put in. You are the real source of your transformation. My job is to help link you to the correct forces/objects. We will track your energy, digestion, sleep, relationships and other factors that serve as clear markers of progress.  Our goal is to reduce suffering and aid transformation.

Can Yoga Therapy be done as a group?

Some elements lend themselves to group or collective healing experiences. However, nothing replaces the importance or power of a personal practice done with purpose, intent, and dedication. Like the traditional practice of yoga, Yoga Therapy is designed to be one-on-one.

What is mentorship?

In the Hatha tradition of Krishnamacharya, all yoga therapists are expected to have a direct mentor. This is a paid position where a more senior therapist is in charge or your practice and helps guide your personal development.

Since my initiation into this field, I have always had a mentor. This relationship is invaluable as a person whose sole focus is to help guide and teach me. It is a one-directional relationship where they are there to support the mentee.

I mentor an array of yoga therapy students, practitioners, and teachers. I am currently accepting new mentees into my private practice.

What is the cost of Mentorship?

Mentees receive a 20% discount on all pricing. Mentees must commit to a once-monthly meeting.

Do you still do private training or yoga privates?

Yes, I still offer private training for select clients and I am available for Yoga (not yoga therapy) privates. Please email info@jorgeluna.com for pricing and availability.
